FTP was a natural extension to the original Auto Backup/FTP program, which just performed a simple backup.

The web site you are reading now is created by Daisy Analysis on a local directory in the normal way.

Auto Backup/FTP is then set to upload the files to the FTP site at a convenient quiet time such as two in the morning. Files are not uploaded unless they are different to a local copy kept in a cache directory to keep the bandwidth required to a minimum.
