Normally, the browser windows are all shown full size, each being shown by clicking the appropriate button on the toolbar.
By using 'Split' the selected pages can be arranged as a horizontal or vertical bands, or as four quadrants. Shown below is a horizontal split with a help window.
And a split into four quadrants.
